Options for Water Filtration Systems

Modern Filtration Systems for the Modern Home

Whether a homeowner wants to make sure their drinking water merely tastes good or if they are worried about possible contaminants, there is a water filtration system that will fit the budget. There are many different types of filtration systems, and they range from the simple filtering pitcher to complex multi-stage reverse osmosis system that can be used for the entire house. There are options for everyone, and it only takes a bit of research to discover what water filter will fit the needs of a particular household.

Filters on the Kitchen Faucet

The most budget-friendly (at around $20-$30) and prevalent of the water filtration systems is the one that attaches to the kitchen faucet. These types are easy to install and typically can switch between filtered and unfiltered water to preserve the life of the filter. The downside of these compared to the large systems is that the filters need to be changed pretty frequently, and they may not filter out as many contaminants. They do also restrict the flow of water somewhat through the filtering process.

  • Pros: Budget-friendly, easy to install, and monitor filter.
  • Cons: Filter only major contaminants. Filters must be changed frequently.

Filters Mounted Under the Sink

Yes, some filters are mounted beneath the sink and attached directly to the water supply. These can be anywhere from 3 to 7 stage filters that filter almost all contaminants out. These can filter hundreds of gallons before needing a filter change and are reasonably priced at as little as $50. Some of these even offer filters that enhance the water’s flavor with healthy minerals after removing the contaminants.

One downside of these is that certain models can reduce water flow through the filtering process. Another con is that because these are hidden away, it is easy to forget to change the filter when it is needed.

  • Pros: Filters majority of contaminants, unobtrusive, filters last a long time
  • Cons: Hard to monitor when the filter needs changing. Some models slow water flow.

Filters for the Whole Home

If a homeowner is ready to put out a good deal of money to have filtered water for the entire house, there are several options available. While this type of filter is the most expensive option available (averaging between $1500 and $2000), they also need fewer filter changes and can filter thousands of gallons of water.

  • Pros: Long-lasting, less maintenance, worry-free drinking water for the whole home
  • Cons: Expensive

These filters provide better tasting water whether a homeowner gets it from a private well or a public water system. Most of these options make the water healthier by removing contaminants like lead, chlorine, and microorganisms. Choosing the correct filter for a home doesn’t have to be difficult and can be made to fit almost any budget.
