Independence Day Is for Family Activities

Kitchen Activities Put a Strain on Kitchen Plumbing, Be Ready!

Summertime is when the kids are out of school, and it’s easy to fall into a pattern of just doing nothing. If someone is looking to break this pattern, consider making July 4th a family activity time. There is much more to do together than merely causing small colorful explosions. Games and water activities usually top the list of things to do, but one mustn’t forget that making things together is one of the easiest ways to bond as a family.

There is very little prep, and there is almost always a job that everyone, even the youngest members, can do. Making snacks and watching movies is another easy activity. Grilling out can easily incorporate all of the above things.

Treats in Patriotic Colors

Making or baking treats that the whole family can enjoy is an activity that one can enjoy on several levels. Consider making cupcakes! A red velvet mix with white icing and star-shaped sprinkles in red, white, and blue will provide a patriotic and tasty addition to the dinner table.

If this idea seems overwhelming, try making popsicles instead. This activity can be as simple as making a red or blue drink mix and pouring it into an ice cube tray with toothpicks resting on the sides. It can also be as complicated as pouring one color into a popsicle mold and allowing it to freeze and then adding another color and the popsicle handle.

Crisped rice treats are another easy choice for a patriotic dish with lots of decoration possibilities. Then, let it sit and then use a star-shaped cookie cutter to create stars to stick on popsicles or cake pop sticks. Melt some white chocolate to dip in, and add some red, white, and blue sprinkles.

Movies for the July 4th Holiday

One alternative if a household is feeling less than kitchen crafty is a good old-fashioned movie night. Grab a bowl and a couple of bags of microwave popcorn, and sit back for some of these patriotic favorites:

  • Independence Day: Enjoy rousing speeches from a president and aliens defeated by Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum.
  • Captain America: The First Avenger: Nothing beats a good superhero combined with the heroics of WWII.
  • The Patriot: Mel Gibson and a young Heath Ledger make this movie well worth a watch.
  • Patriot Games: Harrison Ford plays old-school Jack Ryan.

Grilling Out for the 4th

If a family is looking for outdoor activities, then grilling out is the perfect answer. Adults can handle the grill while kids help set out plates, eating utensils, and sides. A host of outdoor games can keep families entertained.

Cleaning up is the only hassle that comes from any of these tasks. That’s when the fun tends to stop. This is especially true if there are problems with the kitchen plumbing. Life is easy when the water is running both hot and cold, the garbage disposal is grinding well, the drains are free of clogs, and the dishwasher is working. Any of these breaking down can cause the fun to be cut short. The local plumbers are there to keep the summer fun going.
